Unexpected Hospital Visit!

Today we had an unexpected hospital visit.

We'd had a late night with friends, saying goodbye from me (for a little while!) and went to be about 1am. I remember laying in bed and the baby was kicking me and having a mini party in there! Slept fairly crap that night woke up at 3am, 6am and 8am to pee and then snoozed until about 10am.

Oddly enough I did notice that baby wasn't kicking at any of those times since 1am, but just figured it was sleeping etc...

For some reason I wasn't feeling amazing that day. I couldn't get comfortable, I felt exhausted and spent the day trying to stay awake. At about 2pm I realised that the baby really really hadn't moved since I'd felt it when I went to bed at 1am. I spent the next hour trying to wake it up.

I tried the drinking cold water thing, I tried walking about, laying down, husband tried to make it kick him, which he usually gets when he puts his head on my belly. Nothing nothing nothing worked. So I said at 5pm I'd give in and ring the hospital.

5pm rolled around and the baby hadn't. So I called the delivery suite. After 6 attempts I finally got through! I spoke to a lovely midwife that took my history and asked me to come in for some monitoring. She told me to report to the delivery suite. Soooo off we went. I was really nervous and totally felt a bit silly about going. But I had worried myself to the point of wanting to be checked.

When we arrived at the delivery suite the midwife took us into a room and palpated my belly. She said the baby was still laying head down and then she listened to the heart beat. As she could only listen for a minute with the doppler, she said that she would take me to the ward and hook me up to the monitor for a while. So across the corridor we went to ward 31.

On arrival to ward 31 I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was empty other than one other person in there. They allocated me to bed 2, and took my blood pressure - was a bit high (140/90) and my temperature (36.6) I was then asked to go and do a urine sample which I did and then headed back to my bed.

Monitoring Equipment

The midwife palpated my belly again and the baby didn't move again, then she attached me to the monitoring equipment. The band on top was monitoring my uterus and seeing if I had any contractions & the band underneath was tracing the baby's heartbeat. We were attached to a machine and it was doing a printout of heartbeat and movements etc... I was also given a button to press every time I felt baby move.
My view during monitoring!

Once I was hooked up I was told that it could take 10mins to 1 hour for the machine to be happy. Once the machine was happy I would be able to go home. So we sat and waited. The heart rate was fairly low for a while and baby was not moving, the midwife kept coming to check on us which was nice. After a while she gave me a cold glass of water and I mean cold! It was colder than I could ever get the water at home even with ice in it! It took about 10mins then but the baby started moving and after another 10mins of monitoring they were happy.

They wrote in my notes, told me to come back if it happened again and I was sent on my merry way. I am so glad I went in, they were so nice and very understanding. Was worth it as it proved I wasn't imagining the lack of movement, but I am so glad everything was fine!

Until next time....
