So this Easter Weekend, in my state of immobile boredness my Nan and I went through the Old Wives Tales from years ago to see what the universe says I am having! As many moons ago there was little medical input with pregnancy the "Old Wives" came up with lots of ways to predict the gender of their children. If you google pregnancy Old Wives Tales there are hundreds that came up. So we will choose the 10 most common to analyse.
Ps. This was just for fun! (We will find out what the answer is when the baby comes! It's the only accurate way! And the most exciting!!!)
1) Baby's Heartbeat: According to legend if the baby's heart rate is above 140 it is a girl. If it is below 140 it is destined to be a baby boy.
Interesting... Well the midwife started listening to my baby's heart rate at 25 weeks. So here are my stats...
25 weeks - 148 (this would indicate girl)
28 weeks - 135-140 (this would indicate boy)
31 weeks - 150 (this would indicate girl)
= More girl than boy so far!
2) Sweet or Sour: If you're craving Sweet things then you're likely to be carrying a girl. If you're craving Salty things then its likely to be a boy.
Ok well after much chat we decided I "crave" sweet things... however this is no deviation from the norm (pre-pregnancy Kirsty has a VERY sweet tooth!) So I guess I will have to leave it at sweet.
= GIRL
3) Chinese Birth Chart: This ancient method uses your age at conception and the month you did the deed to determine gender. (I am now told to follow a link to try this!) (Link here!)

| There we go: GIRL |
4) Spot On: So if you're more spotty than usual it suggests it's a girl - Apparently girls steal your beauty!
Well with this one I have not had any more spots than usual.
= BOY
5) Nice Ring to It: Pop off your wedding ring (if you still can) and tie it to a string. Hang it over your belly. If it swings in a circle it's a boy, if it goes back and forth it's a girl.
Wedding ring came off and the string came out. It was a definite back and forth....
| = GIRL |
Well if you've read this blog you'll know that sickness and I went hand in hand from approx weeks 7-21. It was not fun or pleasant and I didn't think it was ever going to go!
= GIRL
7) The Carry: If you're carrying high it's a girl, if you're carrying low it's a boy, if you're expanding horizontally it's a girl, if you're all out front it's a boy.
Well this one always gets me. I think I have just got fat all over and yes my hips have gone back to the pre-pregnancy, pre-weight loss me. (insert sad face) I don't know about if I am carrying high or low but with it's definitely not out front. I will let you judge from a bump pic for yourselves but I think I will have to call girl on this one,
= GIRL.
8) Which way you lay: If a pregnant woman prefers to lay on her left side, she's having a boy. If she prefers resting on her right side she's having a girl.
I have to say I am a right sided layer... but I always have been...
= GIRL.
9) Dad's weight gain: If Dad is gaining weight it's a girl. If not it's a boy!
I don't get how this one has anything to do with well, anything! However Dad doesn't put on a pound for anyone no matter how hard he tries!!!
= BOY
10) How's your hair? If your hair is looking dull, thin & sad then you could be having a girl. More luxurious, thicker hair is said to be due to boy genes. If your leg hair is growing faster it could be a boy.
Well, my hair suffered pre-pregnancy (during weight loss) it used to be super thick, curly and gorgeous. One of my first pregnancy symptoms was my hair lost it's curl. It went limp and lifeless and thin.
My leg hair has hardly grown in the last few months, I think I have shaved my legs once in the last 2 months.
= GIRL
So there we have it. Out of the 10 of these, according to the Old Wives, I am most likely carrying a girl as 8/10 of my symptoms point to girl.
Only time will tell, but it was fun to guess and play!
(It would be good as I can only think of a girls name!)
Time will tell!
