So today was the day of the dreaded Glucose Tolerance Test. I was not dreading the test, just the result.
Bit upset with myself that I had to have the test done at all really. When I was at goal I didn't envision ever being big again, but here I find myself heavier than I'd like to be, growing a tiny human and having to go through tests that I should have avoided if I wasn't so greedy.
Anyway! Test was at 9:45am in a Children's Centre about half an hour from where I live. I was told by letter that I'd have to fast from 10pm the night before and I could only drink water until the test. I ate my dinner late the night before (around 9pm) then stopped eating. Honestly had to leave a note for myself to not eat any food and to only drink water!
The next morning I stayed in bed later than usual so that I would not have time to have breakfast and left for the clinic. Managed to get there and find a parking space and then waited in the car until 9:30am (was very early as had no idea where I was going!)
I went into the clinic and was greeted by a nice lady who told me to take a seat. Managed a quick text to my husband to tell him that I had arrived and I was then called in straight away. They took my notes off me (thank goodness I went back and got them from the house this morning!) and then took my blood. Got it first time, no problem. They then gave me a sugary drink to drink. As I gulped it down I realised how thirsty I was as I avoided the kitchen I had neglected to even have some water in the morning. Oops. So the drink went down easily, it was absolutely fine, like drinking squash. No worries at all. It was kind of lime flavour, not unpleasant. I was then led to another room in the children's centre and there were three other women in there, all with bumps waiting. I managed to get a nice comfy seat on a sofa and was told to wait there for 2 hours and not to eat anything until after my next blood test.
Sooooooo the time was now 9:40am and I had a 2 hour wait.
The seats were set out in a circle with a table in the middle with magazines and water. I glanced at the magazines on the table from my seat and realised I knew zero of the celebrities on the front of them. Always had a thing about germies on magazines in clinics etc... so decided not to read them. Sat there for a bit, watched the clock, text a few friends and generally played on my phone etc....
Gradually the room began to fill up and in total there were eight pregnant ladies waiting for 2 hours each to have bloods done.
I felt like I was part of a social experiment. Even checked the room for one way glass. (There was none!) It's just that in the time I was in there, not one of the other women spoke to another. It was silent. Some read magazines, some played on their phones and some just sat there. Eventually I was just trying to stay awake!
11:40am rolled around and I was called in for my second blood test. She did that first time too but it was a bit more brutal than the last time. Knew I would get a bruise from that one! She then said I could go home.
She said that I would hear if the test was positive by Wednesday of next week (4th March) but if all is ok and it is negative, then I would not hear anything at all. So fingers crossed for me that I don't hear anything at all!
Until next time....
